Stretch marks look awful and everybody who has them hates them, including me, and we are all prepared to go to great lengths for stretch mark removal. Stretch marks start off as unsightly red or purple marks which eventually fade to white scars.
Women normally get them around the hip and lower abdominal area and sometimes on the legs and buttocks, while men suffer from stretch marks on the shoulders, chest and back. In rare cases stretch marks have actually appeared on peoples faces, which has done nothing for their self-confidence!
Nobody is exempt from getting stretch marks; you can get them whether you are young or old, fat or thin, male or female. However, stretch marks on are most common in adolescents, mainly boys, who are experiencing growth spurts, and in men who train for strength or for competitions using heavy weights and maybe even steroids to bulk their muscles up. Stretch marks are also common during pregnancy and almost all women who go through pregnancy will get them at some stage usually during the third trimester.
There are a number of remedies available for
removing stretch marks, depending on how bad your problem is, how much you want rid of your stretch marks and how deep your pockets are! Creams and lotions are the most wallet-friendly options, with the most expensive being a surgical operation or laser therapy. Surgery is not an option to be taken lightly and is not suitable for everyone, but can give impressive, permanent results although there is obviously going to be quite a lot of swelling and postoperative discomfort.
Laser therapy is less invasive and usually only gives mild discomfort and slight redness of the skin.Stretch marks are not painful, although they can feel mildly itchy, especially in pregnancy but seeing as pregnancy turns your entire internal workings upside down anyway, a little itching will be the least of your worries! However, there is one serious medical condition that can cause the appearance of stretch marks.
This is called Cushing's disease and means that the adrenal glands within the body are overproducing natural steroids, causing stretch marks to appear around the abdominal area.Cushing's disease, or Cushing's syndrome as it is sometimes called occurs when some small glance near the kidneys brackets the adrenal glands produce too much of a hormone called cortisol.
Overproduction of cortisol can result in serious medical problems including diabetes, dysmenorrhoea in women, hypertension and the appearance of stretch marks due to tears occurring in the deeper levels of the skin. Stretch mark removal must not be attempted if there is any suspicion of Cushing's disease being present, however Cushing's syndrome is not common
